You may have witnessed your computer crashing or showing a blue screen, your mobile stops responding without any reason. Most of the times, you may likely have blamed the manufacturer for happening like that.
Scientists have found out the reason behind all these happenings on the earth - Alien subatomic particles. Sounding weird? Scientists explained how the Alien subatomic particles are reaching the earth and affecting the electronic devices.
How the subatomic particles affect the microelectronic systems:
These operational failures are caused by the impact of electrically charged particles generated by cosmic rays that come from the outer space.
These cosmic rays travel at the speed of light to strike the earth's atmosphere and create a cascade of secondary particles like energetic neutrons, muons, pions and alpha particles.
Millions of these subatomic particles strike your body every second but probably we are unaware and there are no reports of the harmfulness of these particles on living organisms.
Part of these particles has the energy to interfere the microelectronic circuits. When they do so they alter individual bits of data stored in memory leading to freezing of the system. This is called single-event upset or SEU
Scientists are unable to find out when and where these subatomic particles will strike. Hence it is not that easy to determine the prevalence of the SEU.
Incidents happened due to SEU:
Incidents happened due to SEU:
When there is a Single bit flip caused by the SEU, there could be a serious problem ultimately. There are many incidents happened which demonstrate how serious the problem can be.
In 2003, in the town of Schaerbeek, Belgium, electronic voting machine added 4,096 extra votes to a member due to a single bit flip. The error had been identified as the number of votes recorded are more than the number that should be.
In 2008, the avionic systems of the flight traveling from Singapore to Perth affected by the single even upset causing the pilot to disengage from the protocol. This caused the flight dove 690 feet in just 23 sec which injured a third of the passengers on board.
