Benchmark platform Geek bench and Android forum XDA have found that One Plus and Meizu are targeting Antutu, Geek bench and other Benchmarking apps to record high scores by making their CPU run at high frequency during the tests.
According to the report, both One plus and Meizu have the capability to detect when they are under benchmark test and increases the CPU frequency when the benchmark App is running and continue to remain at the same speed throughout the tests. This in a way yields higher scores for the mobile In order to trace out, XDA employed a secret Geek bench tool and observed there was contrasting scores made with a regular and secret version of the app and found that One plus 3T and Meizu Pro 6 are indeed cheating.
When XDA approached One Plus for clarification they said that they do so to make the CPU to run at higher speeds inorder to facilitate the smooth running of games and other graphic intensive apps. One Plus admitted to targeting the benchmark scores but later said that they will remove the targetting in the next Oxygen OS Update. Similar results observed when XDA tested the Meizu Pro 6 Plus. A response is awated from Meizu it this regard.
However, this is not the first instance where OEM's (Original equipment manufacturer) targetted benchmark scores . Earlier in 2013, Samsung has targeted benchmark apps by boosting CPU frequency whenever the apps are detected. XDA also performed similar tests on other OEM's such as Sony, Huawei, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Google and found their scores to be genuine. So it is clear that we can't depend solely on the scores in the benchmarking apps to analyze the performance of the smartphone.
