Researchers find that Vitamin C found in citrus fruits is ten times more effective than some trial drugs in treating cancer

British scientists came out with a breakthrough research who found that Vitamin C could help stop cancer from growing throughout the body. Vitamin C is found in high levels in fruits like oranges, kale and peppers.

The study claims that giving patients very high doses of Vitamin C is 10 times more effective than the drugs being trialed in the battle against cancer. By injecting patients with Vitamin C, the cancer sufferers can get as much as 500 times the amount than they would get through eating. But scientists warn that it is impossible to get the required dose through fruits and so the results are still very early on.

Vitamin C is also called ascorbic acid. Its effects on cancer cells are known to fuel the growth of fatal tumors that had never before been evaluated. University of Salford researchers has discovered exactly how it starves cancer stem cells. By inhibiting the breakdown of glucose, the mitochondria which are considered as the 'powerhouse' of cells are unable to gain required energy it needs to sustain.

Vitamin C is given as an add-on to chemotherapy that could be used to prevent tumor re-occurrence and further progression of the disease.

Cancer stem cells are known to be one of the biggest causes of chemotherapy resistance in patients. This lead to treatment failure in patients with advanced forms of the disease, allowing it to spread all over the body.

In an attempt to disrupt the cancer cells' metabolism, scientists tested a range of seven substances. Three of these substances were natural products that include vitamin C, honey-bee derivative, CAPE and milk thistle extract, silibinin.

All the natural products halted the growth of the cancerous cells, with vitamin C outperforming tenfold in terms of potency among others.

The important thing here for cancer patients to remember is that this study is done to know the action of vitamin C in the laboratory and not the effect of eating foods or supplements that contain vitamin C.
