Airtel has released a JioPhone rival, the Karbonn A40 that has several features to compete with the JioPhone. This is a smartphone, not a feature phone like the Reliance Jio's VoLTE feature phone. Priced at Rs 2899, the customers can enjoy unlimited calling and 500MB of 4G data per month on recharging with Rs 169. Customers can receive a cashback of Rs 1500 on purchasing the phone. So, the effective price of the Karbonn A40 is Rs 1399. But hold on, there is a catch.

Terms and Conditions/Fineprint of the cashback benefit:

The user will be entitled to the cashback of Rs 1500, which is given in two instalments. However, to claim the refund, the customer has to make recharges worth Rs 3000 within the first 18 months to receive the first refund instalment of Rs 500 and extra Rs 3000 over the next 18 months to receive the second instalment of Rs 1000, the company said in the press release.

Hence, to receive a cashback of Rs 1500, you have to do spend Rs 6000 that drilling a big hole in your pocket.

You also have the freedom to choose the recharge denomination if you do not wish to go with Rs 169. But, you can only receive the cashback if your cumulative three months recharge is worth Rs 3000. Hence the company is demanding the customer to recharge with a particular amount like the Reliance Jio.

Is the phone worth to pay even Rs. 2899:

On the specifications front, the features are not even mediocre or on par with today's basic requirement. You get with a 4-inch display, Android 7.0 Nougat, a 1.3Ghz processor coupled with 1GB of RAM. On the camera department, you have a 2MP rear and 0.3MP selfie camera. And of course, you can make calls on 4G VoLTE.

Other points you have to consider is paying an upfront fee and receiving as cashback after a period of 6 months.
