Google previews the world's powerful Quantum processor by far called Bristlecone

It is so fascinating to think about the power of the computers that are constantly improving in the speed that one cannot even imagine. The microprocessor started their progression since the launch of Intel 8008, the world's first 8-bit processor in 1972.  The early 2000s witnessed the debut of 64-bit microprocessors targeted at the PC market.

The processor we are talking now is n number of times more powerful than what a conventional computer can actually process. Bristlecone is the new Quantum processor developed by Google for the future.

Unlike the conventional computers, which use bits, the quantum processor uses quantum bits - also called as qubits. Here is the super easy explanation for everyone. A bit can be at either of the two poles of a field. But a qubit can be anywhere in a field, which means that a computer using qubits can store and process a huge amount of information in lesser time and that too consuming less energy. The quantum processor can handle a large number of inputs and outputs at once. 

Till now, these quantum computers are used only for research and there are several complications in its usage. The quantum computers need to keep their processor in extreme cold and free from any external shocks. Any deviation from these conditions can lead to increase in error rate.


The quantum processor developed by Google is a 72-qubit system. The only near competitor that exists is IBM that developed 50-qubit processor. Bristlecone, developed by Google is undoubtedly 40% faster than the IBM's quantum processor.

What about the error rate of Bristlecone qubit processor? Google's best as on today has been 0.6% error rate using its 9-qubit system. However, Bristlecone's error rate has not been reported by Google.

Researchers are trying hard to bring us the quantum computer as they inescapably outperform the conventional computers in all ways. The term, quantum supremacy has been introduced recently, meaning that a quantum computer can solve a problem that a classical computer cannot solve.
