State Bank of India just reduced the charges levied on non-maintenance of average monthly balance (AMB) by whopping 75%. The reduced charges come applicable from April 1, 2018. This move from SBI comes after intense outrage from the customers against the overcharging by the bank.
Semi-urban and rural bank customers: Charges are Rs. 20 to 40 per month plus goods and services tax (GST) if the average monthly balance is less than Rs 2000 in semi-urban areas and Rs 1000 in rural areas.
Semi-urban and rural bank customers: The revised charges for semi-urban and rural bank customers are Rs 5-12 per month plus GST
Existing charges on non-maintenance of AMB:
Metro and urban bank customers: The charges are Rs. 30 to 50 per month plus goods and services tax (GST) if the average monthly balance is less than Rs 3000 in metro and urban areas.Semi-urban and rural bank customers: Charges are Rs. 20 to 40 per month plus goods and services tax (GST) if the average monthly balance is less than Rs 2000 in semi-urban areas and Rs 1000 in rural areas.
Revised charges on non-maintenance of average monthly balance:
Metro and urban bank customers: The charges are Rs 10 to 15 per month plus GST for metro areas and urban areas if the average monthly balance is not maintained.Semi-urban and rural bank customers: The revised charges for semi-urban and rural bank customers are Rs 5-12 per month plus GST

SBI has collected 17.72 billion as charges from customers on non-maintenance of average monthly balance, which is more than its second quarter (FY 18) profit. The Rs 3000 AMB laid by SBI to its urban customers is the highest among all the PSBs.
