Scientists create a new product that can be added to your toothpaste that repairs enamels and cavities

This is just a great news for people suffering from tooth decay and cavities as the scientists at the University of California have found out a very simple treatment to fill enamels and treat cavities. This is as simple as brushing your teeth. You heard it right!

The scientists claim that the compound could be added to your toothpaste and mouthwashes. Dentists welcomed the product and called as 'promising and interesting'.

Erosion of enamel (hardest tissue in the human body) could lead to yellowing of teeth and sensitivity. Cavities are caused due to the build-up of plague, which is formed by bacteria. The acids found in the plague remove minerals and decay the enamel and dentin.

How is the product made?

  • Scientists created a peptide chain that is derived from amelogenin, which is essential in the formation of enamel.
  • The peptides bind to the tooth surface and collect Phosphorus and Calcium ions, which are key elements in the enamel formation.
  • They promote the formation and incorporation of fluorapatite in combination with fluoride that is found in toothpaste.
  • Scientists say that peptide-enabled formulations have very low regulations from FDA and can be implemented in the over-the-counter products.

This new technology eliminates the need for fillings using the amalgam. Fillings based on amalgam, which is a mixture of metals like mercury are banned in a number of countries owing to toxicity. The doctors across many countries are being urged to stop amalgam-based fillings by 2020.
