This couple from the US won a lawsuit against Johnson and Johnson and received $37 millions over cancer claim

A man from the United States of America won a lawsuit against Johnson and Johnson over cancer claim that the company's talcum powder was responsible for cancer developed in his body. Johnson and Johnson paid a whopping amount of $30 million to him and $7 million to his wife for the damages caused.

Stephen Lanzo, 46, used Johnson and Johnson's talcum powder for more than 30 years. In 2016, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of cancer that develops in the lining of lungs, heart or abdomen. He says that he might have inhaled the powder every time he used it. Talcum powders are made from talc, which is a soft mineral found near the deposits of Asbestos deposits. During the extraction of talc, there could be cross-contamination of Asbestos fibres, which is responsible for causing mesothelioma.

There is a strong evidence that insinuates asbestos contamination in the company's talc, which was reported in 1969. Among all the lawsuits filled till data, Johnson and Johnson will be liable for 70% of the cases and the rest 30% on Imerys Talc, a supplier of the talc to Johnson and Johnson. 

Johnson and Johnson company is facing 6,610 talc related lawsuits currently and the majority of the cases are for failing to warn the people against the risk of using the talcums. In August 2017, the company as awarded $72 million to women from Alabama when she claimed that the company's product gave her ovarian cancer. 

The link between talcum powders and development of ovarian cancer was first reported in 1971, wherein scientist found talcum particles in ovarian tumours.

With all these health issues taking place, it is advisable to lessen the use of cosmetic products as they do more harm than benefit.
