Apple Set to Make iPhones in Bengaluru, India From April

Apple is set to manufacture iPhones in Bengaluru, India. Winston a Taiwanese OEM maker is currently setting up a facility in Peenya, an industrial center in Bengaluru. According to an industrial source, the plant may start production in April.

Top sources from the company revealed that they are serious about beginning assembly operations initially and thereafter manufacturing unit in India by the year-end. This in a way facilitates the creation of jobs that in turn strengthens country's economy. It will also waive off 12.5% import duty levied on iPhones and sets up Apple to price its phones competitively.

Foxconn, Apple's biggest Taiwan-based OEM, prior focused on setting up a manufacturing plant in Maharashtra. Foxconn has tied up with Xiaomi and One plus for manufacture of their products in addition to Apple products. It is said that Apple has posted for Jobs at Apple webpage for an iPhone Operations Program Manager (OPM) and a New Product Introduction (NPI) Product Quality Manager in Bengaluru.



Earlier in July, Apple leased 40,000 square feet for development accelerator in Bengaluru. It is set to open next year and will support local software developers in coding for various platforms of Apple that include iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Apple in recent times has seen a tremendous surge in the sale of its iPhones in India. According to Counterpoint, Apple sold 2.5 million phones in India from October to September 2016. It is also leading company in market share and recorded 66% of premium handset sales. 

The company's net profit grew by 21% attributed to the sale of Old iPhone models at a lower price that garnered a huge user base. Apple once considered as high-end smartphone affordable only to few, but now with its plans to set up a manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, it is sure to garner deeper penetration in the retail market and also gather huge consumer base in India.
