Before Ashwin, Ian Botham achieved the feat way back in 1981 Ashes series in England. If you analyze the other 3 players who did the same there was a gap of minimum 15 years among each of them.
Ashwin had a memorable year so far as he scored 672 runs with the bat and took 72 wickets. He also received Player-of-the-series awards for four successive series against Sri Lanka, South Africa, West indies and NewZealand.
So far, he bagged 7 Player-of-the-series awards in just 37 tests. The list is headed by Muttiah Muralitharan who bagged 11 Player-of-the-series awards. He is expected to add one more to his kitty in the current test series versus England that takes his tally to 8 . With the form and age behind him, he certainly surpasses Murali's record in the future.
Currently, he is No.1 Bowler and No.1 All-rounder in test cricket and ranked No. 41 in Test cricket. So with the form he is in, he is for sure going to climb the rankings.
