TRAI recommends operators to offer 100 MB of free data per month to rural India to promote cashless economy

In order to support the cashless economy and promote Narendra Modi's dream of Digital India, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is coming up with an innovative scheme for rural India. According to TRAI, all the rural people will be offered 100 MB of data on a monthly basis for doing digital payments. Also, the data can be used for any purpose without restrictions.

feature phonesTRAI has already detailed the scheme and funding source for implementing the scheme. Universal Scheme Obligation Fund would meet the cost required for implementing the scheme. In addition, TRAI would set up cess and Universal Access Levy from the telecom operators participating in the scheme to meet the cost.

TRAI also invited telecom operators seeking to provide free data services to register with Department of Telecom and the company should be registered under Indian companies act, 1956. The validity of the registration would be for 5 years and non-transferable in any manner.

TRAI in this February had set up guidelines against Facebook's Free Basics and Airtel's Zero from offering free data services for which they had ended up giving the free offer.
