4G Handset Users to Zoom by 90% and Data Penetration to Jump by 44% by 2019: CLSA Report

The brokerage firm CLSA estimated that the Indian Telecom industry would grow at 4% CAGR (Compounded Annual Growth Rate) to reach $33 Billion by 2019.At the same time, the data revenue would rise at 30% to reach to $11 Billion.

CLSA stated that Bharti Airtel is better positioned than any other telecom operator to counter Reliance Jio to gain the market share. Vodafone India, the country's second-largest telecom operator is at risk of losing subscriber base due to its limited spectrum holdings across India, the firm added.

Due to the ongoing transition towards 4G technology, the operator with adequate spectrum holding will be well placed in this competitive market.

CLSA researched that Bharti Airtel, Vodafone IN, and Idea Cellular would increase the 4G tower capacity by 35% in 2017 and by 85% by March 2019

The Data ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) to be increased to Rs 128 by 2019. Telcos would offer Unlimited voice calling and witness the decrease in revenue from voice callings.

The data subscriber base would reach to 522 million by 2019 with the percentage increase at 17% which is backed by 44% increase in data penetration Of this 3G/4G subscriber base would touch to 318 million from present 200 million.


In the smartphone category, the 4G phone penetration would rise to 318 million with the percentage rise of 90% by 2019. This rise is mainly contributed by advancement in telecom industry and rapid transformation from 3G to 4G
