Your body now has an extra organ; Researchers discover a new human organ in the digestive system

Researchers have identified a new organ n our bodies. The new organ named mesentery is located in the digestive system. Up to now, it is thought of as mere fragmented (broken pieces) separate structure. But the new research revealed it is actually an organ that was not acknowledged for so long.

J Calvin Coffey, a researcher from the University Hospital Limerick in Ireland, first discovered that the mesentery was an organ. The earliest description was given by Leonardo da Vinci who described mesentery as a type of insignificant attachment.
The doctors have been following the same description for over a century and assumed mesentery as a fragmented structure made of separate sections. The new research revealed the description that was followed for 100 years was incorrect. Thanks to the new research, medical students are now being taught that mesentery as a separate organ. The world's best-known series of medical textbooks, Grays Anatomy has also updated and included the new definition.

So now the question arises what is mesentery?

It is a double fold of peritoneum(the lining of the abdominal cavity) that attaches our intestine to the wall of our abdomen and keeps everything locked in place.

But in 2012 Coffee and his colleagues through microscopic examination have shown that it is indeed a continuous structure. They have been working extensively for the past 4 years and gathered all the necessary evidence to prove that mesentery is an organ. Now the detailed composition and structure of mesentery is known, the next step of research will be to know its function. Knowing the function in a way helps us to identify any diseases associated with the abnormal(irregular) functioning of the organ.

The new research also helps to understand whether mesentery has a role in other abdominal diseases and that in turn will benefit doctors to offer better treatment to patients. They have published the findings of their study in the Lancet Gastroenterology and hepatology. The new discovery marks the beginning of the whole new era of science. This indicates there is always much to explore and learn in science no matter how much advances may happen in this field.
