Online Giant Alibaba's UC Web is planning to offer free internet services to India in partnership with telecom operators and Wi-Fi providers, according to Jack Huang, President of Overseas Business, Alibaba Mobile Business.
The report Quoted Jack Huang saying “We will definitely look at the opportunity to work together with service providers or even some Wi-Fi providers. We are trying to offer lower cost data to users and better connectivity, even free of cost connectivity. Wi-Fi providers and other players can be potentials and we are in talk”.
Recently, UC web has announced to invest 120 crores for digital space in India. Earlier, Facebook has launched Internet.org and free Basic initiatives in India that failed to get past the regulations in the country and also faced criticism and raised debate over Net Neutrality in India. However, as part of the digital revolution, both Google and Facebook are actively involved in various programs that aimed to promote rural internet penetration in the country.
Mark Zuckerberg-led Facebook in partnership with BSNL is planning to offer free Wi-Fi services in 125 villages. Earlier, Google Ceo Sundar Pichai announced his plans to promote digital space in India that includes providing free Wi-Fi in 500 railway stations throughout the country. Google in partnership with Railtel communications of Indian Railways has successfully completed Internet connectivity at 100 railway stations and plans to complete the remaining 400 stations by next year.
Also, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio has Launched 4G services in India in September last year and been actively providing free data and unlimited calling plans to its customers from the time of launch. Currently, it is offering the free services as Happy New Year offer that will be valid until 31 March that led to decrease in data tariffs among rival telecom operators across the country.
