Mobile numbers of beautiful girls are sold to recharge outlets across Uttar Pradesh for the prices based on looks which in turn are used my men to harass the girls according to police. The incident came to light after Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav set a helpline 1090 that operates 24 hours. The majority of the complaints about 90% of the 6 lakh odd cases registered so far, comes from women complaining harassment they face over the phone.
The major source of the problem seems to stem from recharge shops where they save the numbers of women who approach them to recharge their mobile phones. They later pass on the numbers to men who are willing to pay and demand the price that ranges between Rs 50 and Rs 500 depending on the looks of the women. A majority of the men after receiving the numbers send the message with an opening line that says "I want to make friendship with you". Sometimes they also send vulgar pictures over what's app.
According to inspector Navnneit SaKera, these recharge shop owners help the men purchase SIM's with fake ID's and keeps stacks in his store. Manu Bhaiya who runs a PCO-cum mobile recharge shop admits these incidents do happen and it is the newcomers in the business who tend to be the major culprits. As the process for becoming a mobile agent is very simple that involves filling up a form depositing security amount with an agency that mediates individual and the mobile operator.
Until now, there are no arrests made so far with regard to the incidents. Instead, police are booking cases on recharge shop owners enabling the purchase of SIM cards under a fake identity. Few women who complained to the helpline say that they adopt new methods as they call from other numbers late in the night and use vulgar words. Police officials say that jails will be flooded by the people if they arrest the concerned persons.
Rajesh pratap yadav working with a helpline says that they usually let the men off giving strict warning. According to him, all kind of men are included ranging from young, old, teenagers, rural, urban, working or unemployed. Some of them say that the women were her girlfriend and she has stopped stalking some say they dialed the number by mistake.

On the other hand, Criminal lawyer, Avninder Singh feel that more strict action needs to be taken to curb the menace.The women share her number to recharge person trusting him and the person selling the women's information is a criminal offense and may land him in jail for as much as seven years.
