Scientists now claim that eating during labor helps women to make the birth quicker and also shortens the recovery time. Until now doctors advise pregnant women in labor to be fed only liquid foods and must avoid solid foods. They attribute this to the fear of choking or may have the effect the anesthetic if an emergency C-section is required.
But the new analysis showed that taking carbohydrates and water during labor helps muscles to work better giving an energy boost to the uterus and may aid in reducing the recovery time in the hospital. At present, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend only clear fluids for women in labor. According to their guidelines, patients taking solid food may be at risk of getting it inhaled into their lungs rather than ingesting it.
Research study
-Researchers from the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia analyzed 10 trials that included 3,982 women who are in labor
-All the participants are not at the risk of caesarean and are about to deliver only single child and did not include the twins or triplets
-All the women are fed with water and food rather than just the ice chips as followed regularly.
-It was observed that these women on an average had a shorter period of labors i.e about 16 minutes lesser than the regular time.
-Also, the researchers did not observe any symptoms of choking or vomiting a concern associated with food intake during labor.
According to the Lead author, Dr. Vincenzo Berghella said that if women are well hydrated and have enough carbohydrates in their body during labor it will help muscles to function effectively.
