Indian Railways is moving towards Aadhaar based ticketing system. This may sound bad news for the agents who usually block the bulk of the tickets and later sell them at higher prices. The situation has become a nightmare for passengers to avail train tickets, particularly during festivals. Passengers shell out extra fare twice to thrice of the base fare to get the confirmed tickets.
However, this is soon set to end as Railways have decided to make Aadhaar number mandatory for booking train tickets online. Aadhar number has been made mandatory for senior citizens availing concessions from April 1. Railways has been running a three months trial run for this.
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has unveiled a new business plan 2017-18 and according to it apart from Aadhaar based ticketing system railways will move towards cashless ticketing system. As part of it, Railways 6,000 point-of-sale machines and 1,000 automatic ticket vending machines across the country. It will also launch an integrated ticketing app in May to promote cashless transaction.
