Researchers find that obese people exercising in middle age reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke irrespective of body mass Index (BMI)

A major study by Dutch scientists found that exercising in the middle age nullifies the harms of obesity. The current research is in contrary to the popular belief which says that being obese people are prone to ill health and in particular heart attack or stroke. Research study

-The team evaluated the health records of 5300 people for 15 years and all of them are aged 55 years or older.
-Researchers found that people with obesity and inactivity are thrice prone to suffer from heart attack or stroke compared with people who exercise regularly and are of healthy weight.
-However, these obese people were able to eliminate the risk of stroke if they are physically active for a period of 4 hours a day.
-The physical activity may include any household work or exercise

Dr. Klodian Dhana, of the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, said that physical activity is very important in the health of middle age or elderly people. He further opined that the  average age of the participants was over 70years and the same may not hold true for young adults

Obesity is associated with the deposition of fatty adipose tissue that further increases the clotting of blood vessels. This, in turn, leads to increased oxygen demand from the heart. On the other hand, physical activity tends to lower the dangers of clotting by reducing the furry plaques that line the blood vessels which in turn lowers heart's oxygen demand.

The Research Study is published in European journal of preventive cardiology
