Samsung - Qualcomm partnership is not from recent years, but it was begun years ago when Samsung launched the Galaxy S and Note series of smartphones. Samsung's every flagship phone features a flagship processor from Qualcomm. The recent Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 also featured Snapdragon 835 SoC at least in the US edition.
But, it looks like Samsung is slowly shifting its gears towards using its in-house developed processor - Exynos. All the global editions of the recently launched Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 are equipped with Exynos 8895 that is on par with the SD 835 of Qualcomm regarding the specifications.
It is interesting to note that Qualcomm till recently is dependent on Samsung for the supply of 10nm chip technology for its SD 835 processor. Not only that, Qualcomm's SD 820 and 821 were also developed on the 14nm chip technology of Samsung.
Now, going to the next leap, Qualcomm is working on SD 845 processor that will be based on the 7nm chip technology. For this Qualcomm has granted the new foundry orders with its Taiwanese rival TSMC.
TSMC is the world’s biggest foundry company. It won the deal for the 7nm chip from Qualcomm as it succeeded in finishing the manufacturing technology earlier than Samsung.
This made Samsung switch its plans and started putting pressure on Qualcomm by reducing its dependence on the Snapdragon chips for its next flagship, Galaxy S9. Till date, Samsung uses at least half of the shipments with the Snapdragon processor and the rest comes with Exynos.
The latest move by Qualcomm let Samsung increase the penetration of its in-house developed processor, Exynos in its future phones by as much as 60-70%.
Samsung, for the S9 phones running on its own Exynos processors, plans to feature a substrate-like PCB, an advanced circuit board technology that houses components vertically to allow more internal storage within the phone.
