Mozilla Firefox launches 'Facebook Container' extension that prevents leaking of personal data to Facebook; Here's how to use

In view of the uproar over the online privacy and data breach that was kicked into high gear earlier this month, the internet browser company, Mozilla Firefox has come with a unique plugin or extension called Facebook Container. This Firefox extension will hide your online activity by preventing Facebook from collecting your web activity.

The Facebook Container extension, when installed on your Firefox browser, will let the Facebook load in a separate tab and when you click the Facebook share button on other sites, it will open the window in a blue tab, thereby isolating other sites from the Facebook. The ad tracking technology developed by Facebook access the web activity of the user and allows the companies to show customised ads to the users.

All third-party Facebook app developers since 2007 were able to blend the user's social network data with their overall web activity. After 2014, no new companies or developers were given access to streamline the data.

How does it work?

  • Installing this extension deletes your Facebook cookies and logs you out of Facebook.
  • The next time you navigate to Facebook it will load in a new blue coloured browser tab (the “Container”).
  • You can log in and use Facebook normally when in the Facebook Container. If you click on a non-Facebook link or navigate to a non-Facebook website in the URL bar, these pages will load outside of the container.
  • Clicking Facebook Share buttons on other browser tabs will load them within the Facebook Container. You should know that using these buttons passes information to Facebook about the website that you shared from.

This extension serves an answer to the people who are worrying about the online privacy and data breach. The Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data scandal which was revealed earlier this month has been worrisome to a large number of the users and this idea from Mozilla now can bring peace of mind.
