The world's largest lighting company, Philips has announced its move into the latest and emerging technology - LiFi (Light Fidelity), which provides broadband internet connection using light waves. Unlike the radio frequencies which are now used to transmit data, LiFi utilizes the visible spectrum, which can deliver broadband internet speed of 100 times faster than the WiFi. This is because the light spectrum is 10,000 larger than the spectrum used by the radio waves.
The company claims that it is the first company in the world to launch the LiFi-enabled luminaires for the broadband and data transmission. The LiFi technology developed by the Dutch lighting giant can transmit data at the rates of 30Mbps between the LED and a LiFi dongle attached to a computer or a tablet.
Each luminaire has a built-in modem that regulates the speed of light, which is detected by the LiFi USB dongle attached to the computer.
Philips LiFi can be extremely useful at places like hospitals, where using radio waves can interfere with the medical equipment like MRI scanners. In places like basements and underpasses where radio waves cannot reach, LiFi can be a perfect solution for the data connectivity.
LiFi can be a hope of connectivity for the IoT devices, wherein the future, there might arise congestion of radio waves. Visible light waves, due to larger bandwidth, can provide uninterrupted data connectivity simultaneously to many devices.
