Now, next time when you admit your grandmother or grandfather in hospital, keep in mind to get them treated by female doctors rather than their male counterparts. A new Research reveals that, older patients who are admitted to hospital and treated by female doctors have more chances of survival than when treated by male doctors.
Researchers found that patients treated by female doctors have 4% lesser risk of dying after admission to hospital within a month. Also, it was found that the chances of readmission of patients in the hospitals within the month decrease by as much as 5%.
The previous studies, suggested there are differences in the ways male and female physicians practice medicine. Female physicians adhere to strict guidelines provide preventive care and communicate more effectively with their patients than their male counterparts.
Researchers examined the data of 1.5 million patients hospitalized in U.S hospitals between 2011 and 2014. Gender wise, there are 620000 men and 960000 women. The average age group of patients was 80 with not less than 65 years of age. These patients were treated by 60000 doctors that included 20000 female doctors and 40000 male doctors.
The researchers observed the relationship between the gender of the doctor treated, with the risk of death and rehospitalization of the patient within 30 days of admission. The findings revealed that patients treated by female doctors have a lower risk of death or hospitalized that treated by their male counterparts.
Dr. Ashish Jha, professor of health policy at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and co-author of the study said that, more research has to be done to know the actual reasons for low deaths in patients treated by female doctors.
The current study is particularly important which supports those pitching for gender equality wherein female physicians take less than 8% of salary than their male physicians.
